Featured Session: How the Korean Content Industry Conquered the World

The South Korean film and television industry is the envy of the world. No other country, with the exception of the United States, has attracted so much attention for its screen content on the global stage. Squid Game became one of the most watched shows on global streaming services around the world, attracting an audience of over 111 million. Their success is both commercial and critical… Parasite won the most prestigious of all awards – Best Picture at the Oscars – the first foreign language picture to ever claim the top prize, and an eight-minute standing ovation at Cannes, where it went on to the festival’s top prize.

Many countries, especially in the Asia Pacific, would like to replicate this success. They ask, what does Korea do right to build such an immense, loyal audience? Is their success the result of a disciplined strategy, and if so, what are the essential components of that strategy? And can their success be mirrored by other countries?

In this session hosted by the Motion Picture Association and moderated by Fiona Williams from SBS, join TV and Film executive Marianne Lee, Film Critic & Commentator Sung-Eun Youn, and Director Yunsung Kang as these three experts on the Korean industry share the magic ingredients that result in the Korean wave, or Hallyu… as it is called in South Korea.
