Revitalising the Maori Language Through Waiata (song)

This panel will speak to the revitalisation of the Māori language through waiata (song). Each speaker will share the story of their relationship with te reo Māori - from reclamation to realising potential - and how song played it’s part. ‘Waiata Anthems’, an initiative that is changing the contemporary sound and attitudes of Aotearoa NZ will feature in discussion, followed by performances by Waiata Anthems beneficiaries MOHI, Jordyn With a Why and Te Kuru Dewes. This panel is presented by Te Māngai Pāho, who are the New Zealand Crown entity responsible for the promotion of Māori language and Māori culture through media and content; and also contributes to the aspirations of the Maihi Karauna, the Government’s strategy for Māori language revitalisation.
