Triple J Unpacks ‘What’s Up in Australian Music’

In September 2023, triple j embarked on a national survey of Australian musicians to uncover what’s happening in the Australian music landscape through the experiences and perspectives of Australian artists.

Our ‘What’s Up In Australian Music?’ survey digs into the lives, experiences and feelings of local musicians on a range of issues such as grant funding, record labels, live performance, artist income, music festivals, social media, artist workloads and heaps more. What does success look like in the industry for artists? What do they want out of a music career? What do they know and think about the industry? Are they hopeful for their future?

Music can bring joy, move people to tears, and it can also sell you something. A well-chosen song can make a campaign successful. That same song choice can break an artist into the market. So, is it a mutually beneficial arrangement? Should Australian brands choose only Australian music? What are some of the best examples of well-chosen music in ads? Our panel of ad execs and artists will dissect all these questions and more in a Gruen-style discussion.
