Yarning Strong - Songlines: The Intersection of Music, Creativity and Culture

Music, spirituality, and creativity have been central in guiding and supporting First Nations people throughout history and enhancing their connection to land, kin and culture. But the process of celebrating and integrating these elements within the contemporary aus-music landscape has not been easy. Join Mitch Tambo for a unique and insightful panel discussion with two accomplished First Nations music industry leaders. The panel will delve into their experiences navigating the ups and downs of a career in music, share the lessons they've learned, and offer a glimpse into their future plans. This event is an opportunity to gain insight into the challenges and triumphs of building a career in music through the lens of Indigenous perspectives and experiences.

This panel is a live adaptation of Support Act's popular online First-Nations focused music panel series, Yarning Strong.

It’s SXSW’s first time in Australia, it’s time to make space for Blak excellence. Here are some hard truths. Indigenous youth make up 6% of the population, yet they make up 42.9% of juvenile detainees. That’s 22 times the rate of non-Indigenous kids. It’s also the highest incarceration rate on earth. Redressing this inequity starts with positive Indigenous representation and making space for Blak excellence. Our idea is simple. This next generation of Indigenous youth is growing up Blak and proud, our panellists want to take the SXSW stage to show the world what that looks like. Over the coming months, Warriors from the Indigenous social enterprise WAW will mentor and champion nine year old Penny to get her stage ready. On the day, we’ll share the behind-the-scenes story of her journey and continue to a roundtable discussion about pride, culture, Blakness and future ambitions. So make some space at SXSW Sydney for Blak excellence and be a part of Penny’s positive Blak future.
We acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation as the Traditional Custodians of this land we now call Sydney, where this event will take place.
