Finance Industry Emergency: A Threat To Our Future

WED, OCT 18, 10:30 AM
Conference
The Finance Industry is the largest industry on earth. Trebling in size since 1983, it now accounts for 25% of Global GDP and reaches 78% of humanity - but it serves just 1%. There's no evidence to suggest that the growth of the finance industry has grown the broader economy, but, alarmingly, plenty that suggests it extracts rent from it. In this session we'll discuss the unique characteristics and conflicts present in the finance industry that go together to make it one of society's most damaging. We'll discuss the unsustainable growth of its contribution to global wealth inequality, look at where and how finance went wrong, the cataclysmic effect it has on society, and, discuss possible solutions. Providing a new perspective on sustainability to a world determined to fix climate, our panelists pose the question; what's the point of fixing climate for the future if only a few of us can afford to live there?
We acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation as the Traditional Custodians of this land we now call Sydney, where this event will take place. We pay our respects to their continuing connection with cultural, spiritual and educational practices, and extend this respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Always was, always will be.
