About
Richard is UNSW Professor in Cybercrime, Cyberwar and Cyberterror. He is the Director of SECedu Australian Cybersecurity Education Network, a partnership between UNSW and the Commonwealth Bank. Richard is UNSW Director of Teaching Practice, and Director of Education at UNSW’s Institute for Cyber Security. Richard has been leading cyber security education at UNSW Sydney for 15 years and is a passionate promoter of an engineering approach to security. His students are highly sought after by industry and renowned for excelling in national and international cyber security competitions. Richard has degrees in Economics and Science, the university medal in Mathematics, Physics, Computing and Electronics, and was awarded one of the first three Microsoft Research Fellowships worldwide. Richard is the Grand Challenge Visiting Professor in Cybersecurity at Taylors University and a Visiting Professor at the National University of Malaysia (UKM). In 2015, Richard gave the opening keynote at EdCrunch, the largest education conference in Europe. He has won numerous peer-reviewed teaching awards from the Australian College of Educators, the Australian Learning and Teaching Council, and Engineers Australia. He was the 2013 Australian ICT Educator of the Year (iAwards) and the 2007 Australasian Engineering Education. Richard loves teaching and has a deep faith in the potential of all his students. His online computing lectures have had over two million views, and he has taught over 10,000 students face to face at numerous levels, including primary school, high school, undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional students, as well as hundreds of thousands of students electronically. He passionately believes in the importance of education, learning, and thinking.
